Investigating a $10M+ Network Outage at a Las Vegas Resort

16 March 2026

A major Las Vegas resort experienced a critical network outage that disrupted hotel operations, backend systems, and customer-facing services across the property. With potential losses exceeding $10 million, insurers required a digital forensics investigation to determine the root cause, assess potential data damage, and evaluate the role of third-party vendors.

Envista Forensics was engaged to conduct a comprehensive forensic analysis of a network outage. By examining network architecture, system logs, and vendor records, our digital forensics experts reconstructed the incident timeline and identified the technical cause of the disruption.

The Incident: Large-Scale Network Disruption on the Las Vegas Strip

In July 2025, a premier hotel and resort on the Las Vegas Strip began experiencing significant network latency that quickly escalated into a widespread service outage. Critical business systems were affected, disrupting operations across multiple departments and impacting guest-facing technology services.

The outage was triggered when a third-party telecommunications provider physically disconnected a mislabeled Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) fiber trunk connecting two data centers. This connection supported key network infrastructure responsible for maintaining communication between critical systems.

Once the fiber trunk was disconnected, the network experienced cascading failures that impacted multiple services across the resort’s technology environment.

Digital Forensics Investigation and Analysis

Envista’s digital forensics and incident investigation team conducted a detailed forensic review to determine exactly how the outage occurred and whether data integrity was compromised.

The investigation included an analysis of the resort’s network architecture and system logs to reconstruct the precise timeline of events leading to the outage. Our team also reviewed vendor records and technical documentation while issuing targeted requests for information to obtain additional operational data.

By correlating infrastructure configurations with network activity logs, our forensic experts identified the physical disconnection of the fiber trunk as the primary cause of the outage and determined how the failure propagated through the system.

Findings and Impact for Insurers

The forensic investigation confirmed that the outage resulted from a third-party operational error involving mislabeled network infrastructure. The physical disconnection of the DWDM fiber trunk disrupted communication between the resort’s data centers and caused a temporary operational shutdown of several systems.

Importantly, the analysis found no evidence of permanent data loss or corruption. Once connectivity was restored and systems were validated, the resort’s network operations returned to normal.

Envista delivered a detailed forensic report documenting the incident timeline, technical causation, and contributing factors. This analysis provided insurers with the independent technical evidence needed to support coverage evaluation, loss assessment, and recovery considerations.

Why Digital Forensics Is Critical in Network Outage Claims

As organizations increasingly rely on complex digital infrastructure, network outages can cause significant operational and financial disruption. Determining the root cause of these incidents often requires specialized expertise in digital forensics, network architecture, and cyber incident investigation.

Independent forensic analysis helps insurers and organizations understand what happened, validate claims, and identify contributing factors such as infrastructure failures, vendor errors, or system design issues.

Envista Forensics provides expert digital forensic investigations for cyber incidents, network outages, and technology-related business interruption claims, delivering clear, defensible findings that support both insurers and policyholders.
