Digital Forensics in Accident Investigation

26 March 2026

In accident investigations, determining what happened in the moments leading to an incident is often critical but not always straightforward. When digital devices are involved, uncovering the truth requires more than surface-level data. It demands a detailed forensic reconstruction of user behavior.

In this case, forensic analysis played a key role in evaluating whether mobile device activity contributed to a motor vehicle collision.

The Challenge

This matter involved a motor vehicle accident where driver distraction was suspected at the time of impact. The central question was whether the driver had been actively using their mobile device, potentially contributing to the loss.

Conflicting accounts made it difficult to establish a clear narrative. As a result, the insurer required an objective, data-driven assessment to determine what actually occurred. The analysis needed to pinpoint device usage with precision and align it to the exact moment of the collision.

Our Approach

Our team conducted a comprehensive forensic examination of the subject mobile device to reconstruct user activity leading up to and during the incident. This went beyond standard extraction, requiring a deeper understanding of how specific applications record and store user behavior.

We performed detailed research into a widely used media-streaming application to interpret its underlying data structures and artifact behavior. Through manual parsing of application databases and system logs, we were able to extract key usage events and validate their accuracy.

To ensure reliability, we correlated multiple sources of evidence, including application activity, network traffic, and system-level artifacts. This multi-layered approach allowed us to build a precise and defensible timeline of device interaction.

Finally, we validated our findings through controlled testing on an exemplary device, replicating real-world conditions to confirm that the observed artifacts accurately reflected user activity.

Results & Impact

The forensic analysis confirmed that media streaming was actively occurring at the time of the collision. This provided strong, objective evidence supporting the conclusion that driver distraction was a contributing factor.

By establishing a clear and defensible timeline based on multiple independent data sources, the findings strengthened the insurer’s position. The ability to rely on validated digital evidence reduced uncertainty and enabled a more confident and efficient claim resolution.
