He is a licensed fire investigator in Washington, Oregon, and Montana, and has conducted fire and explosion investigations throughout those states as well as in Alaska, California, Idaho, Wyoming, Texas, Connecticut, and New York.
He began his professional career in 1979 with the Washington State Patrol, where he provided security for former Governors Dixy Lee Ray and John Spellman. After more than three years with the Washington State Patrol, he chose to pursue a career in firefighting.
Brian began his firefighting career in The Dalles, Oregon, in 1984. In 1988, he was hired by the City of Olympia Fire Department, and he and his family moved back to Olympia. He was promoted to Fire Inspector in 2001 and frequently spoke at public engagements about fire safety in homes and businesses. He has extensive knowledge of fire prevention and fire extinguishment control systems.
In 2008, he was promoted to Lieutenant and became the coordinator of the Olympia Fire Department’s Fire Investigation Team. He was the first and only member of the department to achieve triple certification in fire and explosion investigations: IAAI CFI, NAFI CFEI, and ISFAC CFI. From 2014 to 2016, he served as a role player and evaluator in practical exams for fire investigators, and in 2010, he played an instrumental role in the arrest and conviction of a serial arsonist in Olympia.
Brian retired in 2018, completed the construction of his family’s home the same year, and began his private career as a professional fire investigator in February 2019.
