He is a licensed fire investigator in Washington, Oregon, and Montana, and has conducted fire and explosion investigations throughout those states as well as in Alaska, California, Idaho, Wyoming, Texas, Connecticut, and New York.
He began his professional career in 1979 with the Washington State Patrol, where he provided security for former Governors Dixy Lee Ray and John Spellman. After three years with the Washington State Patrol, he chose to pursue a career in firefighting. Brian began his firefighting career in Oregon in 1984. In 1988, he was hired by the City of Olympia Fire Department. He was promoted to Fire Inspector in 2001 and frequently spoke at public engagements about fire safety in homes and businesses. He has extensive knowledge of fire prevention and fire extinguishment control systems.
In 2008, he was promoted to Lieutenant and became the coordinator of the Olympia Fire Department’s Fire Investigation Team. He was the first and only member of the department to achieve triple certification in fire and explosion investigations: IAAI CFI, NAFI CFEI, and ISFAC CFI. In 2010, he played an instrumental role in the arrest and conviction of a serial arsonist in Olympia.
From 2014 to 2016, he served as a role player and evaluator in practical exams for fire investigators. Brian retired from the fire department in 2018 and began his private career as a professional fire investigator in February 2019.
