Mr. Sheffield is a structural engineer with over 35 years of engineering experience. His experience is built on his structural design of buildings, preparation of construction drawings, project management during design and construction, threshold building inspections, structural assessments of existing buildings, and forensic failure and damage investigations of buildings.

Structural design experience includes airport terminals, aviation hangars, NFL football and MLB baseball stadiums, arenas, hospitals, schools, hotels, offices, retail, and pedestrian bridges. Design experience includes developing framing concepts and the design of the following framing systems: reinforced concrete, structural steel, precast concrete, tilt-up construction, light gauge steel, concrete masonry, and timber. Mr. Sheffield has extensive experience in the structural renovation and alteration of existing buildings which involved the re-configuration or strengthening of structural framing systems to accommodate alterations, additions, or changes in the use of the building.

Forensic engineering experience includes amphitheaters, churches, commercial buildings, government facilities, historic buildings, multi-family residential buildings, office buildings, parking garages, retaining walls, retail shopping centers, pre-engineered metal buildings, sports facilities (which includes football, baseball, and marine stadiums), entertainment theaters, and marine structures (which includes fixed docks, floating docks, seawalls, and boat hoists). His expertise in forensic engineering involves performing structural assessments to determine the structure’s existing condition and the cause of the failure or damage to the structure or building envelope. Investigative methods included destructive removals of the structure, materials testing, soil investigations, moisture content measurements, infrared imagery, structural analysis (including the use of 3D analysis and design software), in-situ load testing of the structure, and drone photography. Investigative work on damaged structures has resulted in the design of structural repairs and the preparation of construction drawings for permitting and construction. Mr. Sheffield has provided expert witness testimony on litigation involving disputes over damage to the structure and construction defects.
