Things to consider when looking at fire losses due to large and complex Wildland Fires
Wildland fires, no matter what state or area you cover are all driven by the same factors - fuel, weather and topography. The type of fuel (grass, brush, trees, etc.), wind direction/speed, humidity and slope of the land will give insight into why the wildland fire is burning in a certain direction. If a strong wind is blowing out of the SW then the wildland fire is going to primarily head towards the NE. Wildland fires burn faster going uphill and slower downhill or against the wind. But what caused the wildland fire? Research shows over the past 14 years, on average there are just over 62,000 human caused wildland fires and around 10,000 lightning caused wildland fires every year in the United States.
